Batteries are pretty cheap.

I use rechargable ones, they're so much user to use.

Toothpaste

While some personal-care products, like shampoo, can be excellent dollar-store buys, toothpaste isn't one of them. In June 2007, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers that many imported toothpastes typically found at dollar stores and other discount outlets contained the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG) -- most commonly used as a thickener in antifreeze. To date, the agency has identified more than 40 hazardous brands, including several counterfeit tubes that look like Colgate.

Repeated brushing with a DEG-laced toothpaste can have serious health consequences, says Rita Chappelle, a spokeswoman for the FDA. "It causes liver and kidney damage and other gastrointestinal problems," she says. Although import restrictions and recalls were issued to halt the distribution and sale of the tainted toothpaste, consumers still need to remain vigilant. "There could still be some products on shelves," warns Chappelle. Because it can be tough to tell the problem tubes from the real deal (it's not as if diethylene glycol is listed as an ingredient), the safest course is to fork over a little more cash for a tube at your local supermarket or drugstore, where there's more quality control.

FDA has found a poisonous chemical, diethylene glycol (DEG), in certain toothpastes imported from China. The agency increased its scrutiny and testing of imported toothpaste and dental products after receiving reports in late May 2007 of contaminated Chinese dental products found in several countries, including Panama.

The agency is warning consumers to avoid using tubes of toothpaste labeled as made in China and, through an import alert, is stopping all suspect toothpaste from entering the United States. FDA continues to investigate this problem and will take further action, as appropriate, to address this important public safety issue. View News Updates

Got that article from the daily AOL screen news blurbs, today,

Somewhere in the whole thing it also explains why SOME brands of the batteries might be so cheap
they say they may use a different, cheaper, component, that makes them not last as long

and all that may be true
and maybe my theory that they are the same
but just bought in another country
might be wrong
but I sure haven't noticed that they last FOUR TIMES LESS LONG
and they are around one fourth the cost of those sold in regular grocery stores

my rule
with batteries has always been to buy the cheapest ones
even if they don't last as long
because the longer life you get is never worth the extra money
a battery that lasts 20% longer seems cool
but if it costs 75% more...
what have you really gained? Confused

the only way the more expensive ones are ever worth it
in my experience
is if you have them in something you just don't want to replace as often

like if yer camping
and are planning on hiking uphill
and need to conserve every ounce of weight

or if it's in some instrument that you have to go out to
when the batteries die
and you only want to go there as few times as possible

but
anyway
batteries aren't gonna kill you
this criminal Chinese scam-industry toothpaste crap just might
Evil or Very Mad

I'm scared to buy anything from china

I remember that story about how someone saw how some of them dry tea leaves

they lay the tea out on a garage floor
and run the exhaust from trucks over it
just like big hair dryers, right?
yeah
and the gas they were using, in the trucks, was leaded Mad Rolling Eyes

Holy shit Me n my little girl have been brushing with colgate
since I got a shitload for 50 cents a box at the supermarket
last summer. Still have 4 or 5 boxes left. It says cavity protection
on them though and not "maximimum cavity protection".
I
wonder if that matters. Think I better hop off to the health canada
website and see where this shit is turning up.

That's it, Either we Nuke China or
people have to stop buying their shit at wal mart and dollar
stores and thus causing all these counterfeit chinese health
hazards we are buying in these stores. Screw china.
Buy North American if you live in North America, buy
European if you live in Europe. Nothin but lead
painted toys and poison toothpaste comin overseas
from asia. Hell I'd say "Buy Mainstreet Yourtown"
but er, mom and pop and mainstreet got crushed by
walmart in every town one's ever been built.
